Mountain Bike Trails in Birds Hill Park - A Manitoba Gem

I was introduced to the mountain bike trails in Manitoba's Birds Hill Park by a fellow mountain biker I met on a Winnipeg bike forum. He's an avid biker who seemed to know his way around the park very well and had been mountain biking for many years more than myself. Yet even he didn't know about some of the excellent single track trails I found there this year! More on that later, first I'll tell you about the bike trails he did show me.

Birds Hill has an area in the North full of walking, hiking, and horse back riding trails. This is where perhaps the most interesting of the mountain bike trails are hiding. Read on and you'll know where to find all the great single track mountain bike trails in Birds Hill Park.

If you can find your way to Griffiths Hill then you are doing good. You'll know if you've made it because there's a viewing tower there (see map legend). From there you don't have to go very far to discover some very interesting trails that cycle up and down a ridge created by glaciers. Bike your way behind the tower on the "Esker" trail and look for entrances down the ridge on your left hand side. Yeah, that's what I'm talking' about! Short and cool little single track trails that twist through the trees. They're fun to descend and challenging to climb. I think there's three or four of them along the Esker trail behind the tower which descend down to the "Chickadee" trail (again, consult you legend). Now, come back to the tower and take your bike along the Bluestem trail heading in an Eastern direction. You should be on top of a ridge again and be able to very quickly (within 20 feet) find entrances to descend the ridge. Very fun mountain biking.

Now, back to this trail I discovered this year. It's very well known, but I think it's fairly new. It's called the "Bur Oak" trail. Look at your map again. Look in the South-West corner of the map for a number seven in a circle. That's the Bur Oak trail. It's actually a paved walking trail, but on the outside of the paved walking trail a wicked single-track mountain bike trail has been cut. It's used for races on some Wednesday nights in the summer. Olympia cycle puts it on I believe. You can pull your car right into a spacious parking area complete with picnic tables, covered picnic area, fire pits, and washrooms. The trail is fast and twisty hard packed single track that varies from flat to up and down. From the parking lot look for the trail entrance just next to the covered picnic area. This section can be ridden very fast but has it's share of twists and turns, so remember the golden rule of single track mountain biking: look ahead. Look way ahead, around the next corner. Your peripheral vision will take care of your immediate needs, and looking ahead will allow your brain to register what's coming and remove any surprises. It's like the Bush regime doctrine of pre-emption, only with less death.

After you ride for about 10-20 minutes (depending on your speed) you will arrive at a three-way crossroads. Stay left and you complete the trail circle with about the same amount of riding left...but you don't want to do that if you have the energy for a little more! Head down the trail in the middle and you treat yourself to some windy root-filled descending. You will emerge from the trail on the left, so you have the option of taking that one now as well and then emerging in the middle. Make sense? The trail on the left appears to head along a sand-ridge, which it does for a short time. Quickly you will see a trail entrance on your left-hand side which has a straight descent followed by an entrance to your left. The reason I say take the trail in the middle is because you get to descend the twisty stuff instead of climbing it, which is better for my old legs.

Birds Hill Park is famous for the Winnipeg Folk Festival which comes rain or sun every July. I think the Winnipeg Folk Festival was voted best festival in North America recently. I usually go camp in the festival camping, which is a little wild and loud but very safe and full of amazing people, sites, and sounds. There's other camping with more services for people who want more quiet or privacy. Where I camp there is a hill called Popes Hill that festival campers play bongo and dance and hang out on 'till the wee hours of the morning. John Paul 2 visited Popes Hill back in 84 (don't quote me, that's according to Mark). The hill is sizable and fun to ride up and down. Nothing crazy, fairly smooth but it's good practice. Look for it North of East Gate Drive. On the map look to the East end of the park for an L shape which is the road around the festival (a.k.a. group) camping area. Go down that L shaped road and you'll see trail-heads that lead into the camping area. You will find lot's of neat camping spots with BBQ's for some wieners, and if you walk West across the camp area you'll soon see The Hill which is a great place to visit on a bike or by foot.

The final trail system in Birds Hill Park I'll tell you about is not really on the map. Across the street from the White tailed deer trail is a restaurant. Turn onto the road that the restaurant leads off of and keep going for 50-100 yards. Look for a trail leading off on your right side. I've only been through there a couple times, so can't say much about it other than it's fun and challenging. There is a gravel pit in there, but you can mostly avoid the sand and gravel while biking around it. You're likely to see some quads and dirt bikes, but they like to hang out in the pit more than the single track trail. That's been my limited experience anyway. Make sure your mountain bike is dialed in before you head out, naturally. Take a spare tube and pump. All these trails are doable by the beginner, but don't make the beginner mistake of not being properly equipped. Most importantly, take lots of water with you. You cannot do these mountain bike trails with only one bottle of water - you need two or a camelback. Mountain Equipment Co-op has excellent deals on camelbacks. It's their own brand (not the camelback brand name) but they're less than half the price of the bike shops and they're perfectly fine. Then you can get rid of that useless under-the-seat bag which keeps breaking and put your tube and tools in your backpack! Be sure you check out a good map of Birds Hill Park before you head out on your ride, so that you can get a good feel for the area you'll be biking in.

Have fun!

Suzuki GS150R Review

The Suzuki GS150R bike is perhaps the most anticipated motorcycle that is going to be launched in the Indian market. So far the 150cc game has been ruled by a few companies namely Bajaj with their Pulsar and Honda with their Unicorn. More and more people are moving from 100cc bikes to 150cc bikes by skipping the middle 125cc segment.

With better jobs all over India, people are able to afford for a better biking pleasure. A little more bhp will add a little more adrenalin and it is the most satisfying feeling for a biker. This is a perfect time for Suzuki to launch their new 150cc bike, the Suzuki GS150R. While many expected that the bike will have a sporty finish like the Yamaha R15, it is actually playing a safe game for now by competing Unicorn and Pulsar.

However this bike has better power than its competitors. The bike produces 15 bhp of power with its 150cc engine which is quite impressive. Also the bike has a digital console which displays the speed, engine rpm and fuel level. Even though the bike should have been equipped with mono shocks because it is the latest trend, the gas suspensions do a pretty good job like the Apache RTR.

If you are planning to buy a bike in the 150cc segment, it would be better if you can wait for the Suzuki GS150R. Once the bike is launched, it will be featured in online bike blogs and offline magazines. You can read the review and road test and then make a buying decision.

Yamaha Scooters and Its History

The Yamaha Motor Company began production of Yamaha Scooters in 1955 and started exported the first models of Yamaha Scooters to the United States in 1960. At first Yamaha's were little more than scooters of a style that was familiar in movies of the period. The company has produced ever greater examples of excellence in engineering ever since.

Through the years Yamaha has worked to refine their scooters to fit the end consumers. For the most part they have been very successful. Producing models that are lightweight and could stand up to the elements. The Yamaha 125cc and 250cc models were ridden by a million people in the 1970s. But even as early as 1970 Yamaha produced a four-stroke 650cc, the XS-1, that was a beauty to behold.

Today, Yamaha makes a broad line of bikes and scooters that encompass all types and sizes. Models range from the 50cc scooters to the 249cc Virago all the way up to the 113ci (1854cc) Stratoliner S and the V-4 Royal Star Venture. The latter is 'only' 70ci (1147cc), but its liquid-cooled engine puts out a throaty roar, and the ride is as smooth as a Jaguar.

Be prepared to put out some serious cash for the larger Yamaha motorcycles models. These cruisers and touring bikes start at $15,000 and with Accessories and customization can easily run $20,000 or more. Fortunately, like Harley-Davidsons, a well-maintained Yamaha can keep its value year after year. Many older models sell for more than new bikes.

But in contrast, Yamaha scooters are very economical. On the low end you could spend as little as $2000 dollars for a brand new Yamaha scooter. But on the high end you could spend as much as $8000 to $9000 dollars. The higher end models have more bells and whistles. They also have larger engines allowing them to be very good resources in urban cities.

The 49cc Vino Classic is a great starter scooter for younger riders, but would be appreciated by women and others as well. This is a European classic retro style, straight out of the movies scooter. Weighing 166lbs it may be small but it delivers plenty of power for zooming along the streets or hill climbing off-road.

This is the biography of the legendary American triple 500cc world motorcycle champion Wayne Rainey. It covers his two lives - from childhood up to the moment he crashed in Italy on September 1993 severing his spinal cord, then afterwards struggling to come to terms with life in a wheelchair, and returning to the track as a racing team owner - he talks frankly of his ambitions, his anguish, and his courageous new role.

!1: Best Buy I met Wayne Rainey at the 1993 Malaysian Grand Prix when I was working for the company that sponsored him . I am a motorcycle rider , but had never been to a GP race before. We had a cocktail reception the night before the race, and casual beers with Wayne, Kenney Roberts, and their crew the evening after his amazing win. Wayne was as relaxed and down to earth as anyone I'd ever met, and not at all self-impressed with his amazing three Championship titles (and being in the lead for a fourth). I am not usually in awe of celebrities, but Wayne was so "normal" you couldn't help to feel like you had known the guy for years.
The day of the race, I stood at the corner at the end the main straightaway. I watched as Wayne led the pack roaring down the straightaway at almost 200 mph towards me after the first lap. Seeing him wait until the last possible moment before braking hard, and then throw the bike and himself into that corner at an impossible lean-angle, was the most impressive feat of human courage I have ever witnessed first hand. I told him so over beers that night, and he only blushed and, knowing that I rode bikes, said that I "could probably do it with practice". (Ha !).
I later watched in horror as he crashed in Italy, and followed his perseverance as he made the trip back into racing as Yamaha team manager despite his disability.
The most wonderful thing for me about having met him , is that Wayne has given me two vivid examples of human courage and bravery to strive for....One as a racer, and one as a man who has dealt with his paralysis with grace, dignity, and every bit as much bravery as it takes to throw yourself into a corner at 160 mph.........celebrating human courage , knee skimming the pavement, concentrating and intense despite being surrounded by 15 other crazies on screaming 500 cc GP bikes all doing the same thing. I am 56 years old now and haven't met him since, but 17 years later, I think of him often.....Wayne is still the most courageous man I ever met. on Sale!

Why Should You Wear A Helmet When You Ride Your Motorcycle

As I am writing this article I am thinking of the recent accident involving the Pittsburg Steelers star quarterback, "Big Ben" Roethlisberger. If he had been wearing a helmet his injuries would not have been nearly as severe.

For most of us bikers a helmet just doesn't fit our perception of what biking is all about, which is freedom! I mean, hey it just doesn't look cool to be on a hog with that little sissy helmet. But, I think it looks way less cool to have your face all scarred up from sliding on it down the road!

According to statistics almost every crash where the rider wasn't wearing a helmet resulted in a major head injury. In one study out of 900 crashes there were 980 head and neck injuries which seems to indicate that the passengers on many of these motorcycles were not wearing helmets either.

Our neighbors to the north in Canada have now made it illegal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet due to the large percentage of fatalities in accidents in which the rider was not wearing one. Of course in the United States, like many other laws it is left up to the individual states to decide the ruling. I know where I live in Florida they repealed the helmet law a few years ago and according to an EMT buddy of mine it has caused a dramatic increase in head injuries.

If you value your brain and your life you should be responsible enough to wear a helmet. Some of the factors that you should consider when buying a motorcycle helmet are below.

All motorcycle helmets consist of two main parts, an inner shell or liner which is made of impact reducing foam and an outer shell which is made to absorb the initial impact and protect your head as well as take all of the damage that the road or other hard object would have done to your head.

When buying a motorcycle helmet you should be sure that it has been approved by the Department of Transportation. If the helmet has been approved it will have a sticker from the government agency stating so. Another sticker that is recognized all over the world is from the Snell Memorial Foundation.

Another thing that is hugely important is making sure that the motorcycle helmet you buy fits properly. You need to make sure that it doesn't fit too loose or too tight. When you take it off there should be no marks on your face from the pressure of the helmet, if so the helmet is too tight.

You also want to be sure that it doesn't wobble around or come off easily. If you are in an accident and the helmet comes off at first impact you may be bouncing down the road on your head!

Where To Buy Dirt Bike Racer (Matt Christopher Sports Classics)

Over All Rating Reviews :
Dirt bike racer is about a teenage boy who was scuba diving one day with his friend and decides to dive deeper than he usually does, and on his way down he catches something out of the corner of his eye. It was a dirt bike! And from then on the fun began.
The coolest part of the book was when he actually started riding the bike. I couldn't believe how fast he got used to it. Usually it would take you awhile to get used to a new dirt bike, especially if you have never ridden dirt bikes before. But hey, it's a book.
I would recommend this book because it's a great story for guys, like me, who don't like reading. This is a great book for somebody who is actually interested in dirt bike books. There is plenty of action and some comedy. The book has some illustrations, but my favorite one was of a list of the parts he needed for the bike, since it was in the water for so long. All in all it was the best book I have read this year.

Have you ever thought of running away from home? In Dirt Bike Runaway, Peter ran away from his foster home. Well in my opinion I believe that his adventures were exciting and mind blowing, BUT I don't recommended that anyone run away. In the story Peter meets Jess Kutter, Bill Rocco, Dexter.
The book starts out as a fight between Dex (A.K.A. Dexter) and Peter. In the middle he met Giff & D.C. You are not going to believe all the mischief these boys get themselves into. Peter is well on his way to getting the REAL family he deserves. Find out who he calls family.

I rate this book a four because the author used very good desciption. He tells what the people look like. He tells about the bibes the bikers ride. What their bike engin is. He tells how many bikes race in a heat. He talks about the track a lot. He did not make him be the best or the worst. He did good sometimes and he did bad sometimes. i think there should of been a little more information in one area. I recomend this book to a seventh-eighth grade student. I recomend this book to a seventh-eighth grade reading student because he talks about things that a younger kid would not know about. This is a very good book to read.

One of the books I read from the author Matt Christopher is called Dirt Bike Racer. The book began at Ron's house. One day he went scuba diving and he saw a dirt bike. Then two weeks later he went back to see if it was still there. Then Matt took it with him home and his dad helped him fix it.

In the middle of the story they heard something in Ron's garage. The neighbor saw it, too, and he called the cops. They were in the garage and they found screws on the floor from the dirt bike. The thief was going to steal parts of the dirt bike.

I like this story because I like to ride dirt bikes. You can go off ramps and to do flips and back flips. This author, Matt Christopher, seems to like sports just like me such as football, baseball and dirt biking. It was exciting for Ron to find a dirt bike in the ocean. If you read this book you would like
it as much as I did!

Once Ron finds a dirt bike at the bottom of a lake he can't believe his eyes. So, the next day he goes scuba diving to find it. But the bike will need some fixing. Ron is certain that his motorcross dream will come true. I think that Matt Christopher's style of writing is spectacular. I feel that his writing is very descriptive and detailed. When he writes he doesn't tell, he shows. So when he writes that the back wheel is spinning, he says, "It is spitting up dirt and rubble!" When Matt Christopher writes a beginning of a story he doesn't start with a dull beginning he starts with action usually destruction. In my book, he starts with a windstorm that blows some belongings away into the lake. I think that is how good writers write.

I recommend this book to anyone that likes sports and has a tough time reading. They will really enjoy this book. This book is a good book because the words are descriptive and it's easy to comprehend, and the details that the author has given us in the book make us feel that we're the character. "The bike bucked and bounced, and a couple of times it skidded to the side to much that I almost lost my balance and fell. But I managed to keep it upright, using my feet to balance it when I felt it leaning over too far." Another great thing about this book is how there are a couple of pictures and that makes me visualize where the character is in the book. One of the pictures shows Ron on his dirt bike and he's in the air after jumping the ramp, Ron said " You're not going to stop me, no matter what you do!" If you like sports and you have a tough time reading, this is the book for you.

Dirt Bike Runaway
I think this is a really good book to read for people who are interested in a dirt bike book. I have a four-wheeler so I like reading these kinds of books. Matt Christopher writes a lot of good books about sports. I would recommend this book to kids from the age 11 to 15.
The guys name is peter and he is a genius with dirt bikes. He can fix them up. Peter is a good rider when he races also. Peter started the race and was really nervous when he would ride a berm and go off a jump. He seen jess riding right beside him and trying to run him of the track but he stayed focused and didn't move. Peter was mad after he finished the race because he didn't place as well as he wanted to.
I like how this book is easy to understand and you can comprehend all the information. It inspired me a little bit. This is a great book for kids and young adults that like outdoor or dirt biking books. I would recommend this book to anyone
